About Convent of San Jose Coneta
One of the five oldest churches in Chiapas, it was founded in 1500 near the now border with Guatemala. Depopulating the town around 1800, the church is in a state of semi-abandonment and even by 1839, when John Stephens visited it, it had already lost its roof. However, its facade is typical of Mexican and Central American colonial art, and it has many exclusive designs making it worth visiting.
